Join us in Oaxaca for an intimate weeklong ceramics-focused workshop where guests will learn from and work alongside skilled Oaxacan potters.

This trip begins with harvesting local clay and learning traditional processing techniques, offering a hands-on introduction to the foundations of the region’s rich ceramic traditions. Throughout the week, guests will shape their own pieces and participate in a communal firing, deepening their understanding of both form and function through lived experience.

Accommodation for this trip is at a boutique hotel in the heart of Oaxaca City, placing guests within easy reach of markets, galleries, and cultural landmarks. This urban setting offers a dynamic complement to the tactile, grounded nature of the workshop. Space is limited to 10 guests.

CLAY HARVESTING

Guests will travel to the village of San Marcos Tlapazola, renowned for its deep red clay and generations of women potters who have shaped its legacy. There, alongside local artisans, guests will participate in harvesting clay directly from a nearby mine—gaining a tactile understanding of the raw material at the heart of the region’s ceramic traditions.

Guests will take part in a clay preparation workshop. Here, local artisans will guide guests through the essential steps of preparing the clay—cleaning, drying, grinding, and kneading—transforming raw earth into workable material ready for building.

CLAY PROCESSING

BUILDING + FIRING

Alongside master artisans, guests will learn to build their own ceramic pieces using a traditional pre-Hispanic handbuilding method unique to the region. This ancestral technique relies on shaping the clay entirely by hand, without the use of a potter’s wheel, often using tools such as gourds, stones, or corncobs to refine form and texture. Through this process, participants will experience a slower, more intuitive way of making.

ARTISAN VISITS

Throughout the week, guests will meet a diverse group of artisans who embody both the rich heritage and contemporary evolution of Oaxaca’s crafts. From traditional artisans in the surrounding villages to innovative modern designers based in Oaxaca City, these encounters reveal how ancestral techniques continue to inspire fresh creativity today. Through visits to workshops and studios, participants will gain insight into the vibrant dialogue between tradition and innovation that defines the region’s thriving craft community.
