Why should I go on a Thread Caravan trip?

Thread Caravan trips provide an intimate and connected form of travel. In just a week's time, we introduce you directly to local makers whom you'll get to work with to learn a traditional craft.

These trips are great for people who may already have an artistic hobby and want to take it to the next level, for people who want to learn a new skill, or for people who just want to travel in a more intentional and connected way.

Who goes on Thread Caravan trips?

Thread Caravan trips are open to anyone 18 years or older. During our trips we take local modes of transport, try local cuisine and partake in adventurous activities. The trips usually attract open-minded travelers.

You don't have to be an artist to come on the trips! We connect with the local artisans in a way that accommodates both beginners and experienced artist travelers.

Our trips are open to single travelers and groups. Don't worry about traveling with a friend - you will likely become friends with the other travelers on the trip you join.

How many people are on each trip?

Each trip has 4 - 12 people. We like to keep it small so everyone has the opportunity to really get to know each other.

When will you announce more trips?

As a small start-up travel company, we do our best to offer trips as frequently as possible without spreading ourselves too thin. You can stay up to date with new trip date announcements by following us on Instagram or signing up for our email list.

In a hurry to go on a trip with us? As always, if you have a group of 6 or more travelers, we can accommodate your group by letting you select your own trip dates!

Will I have any free time?

Each trip is a little different. As travel guides, we want to show you the best of each destination we take you to. In addition to including a set schedule of some of our favorite activities, our itineraries also include flexible time periods where travelers are free to venture solo or choose from a list of suggestions.

Do I have to pay all at once?

No. You have the option to pay all at once, or in three separate installments. For each trip, a $500 non-refundable deposit will secure your spot. The rest of the payment is due at least one month prior to the start of the trip.

What's included in the cost?

This also varies a little bit with each trip. Typically, cost includes everything once you arrive in the country except alcohol and extra spending money. Make sure to read the information for the trip you're booking so you know exactly what's included and what's not.

What's not included in the cost?

Airfare, travel insurance, and alcohol.

What if I don't want to purchase travel insurance?

We strongly advise you to purchase travel insurance. This is mostly in case you have to cancel the trip unexpectedly. Thread Caravan is not liable to refund you if you cancel within a month prior to the trip. If you have travel insurance, you will be able to be refunded by the insurance company.

Travel insurance will also cover things like theft, illness, etc. during the trip.

Please contact us if you need advice about which plan to book.

Will I need a travel visa?

Whether or not you need a Visa will depend on your home country and the country we're visiting. If you are a U.S. citizen, you do not need a Visa for any of the countries we currently offer trips to (if you are only traveling the length of our trip). If you plan to stay longer, or are not from the U.S., you should inquire about a Visa with your embassy. We are also happy to help you figure this out.

Is Zika Virus something I should be worried about?

There have been cases of Zika found in all of the countries we are currently offering trips. However, if you are not pregnant or planning to be pregnant, it should not be a problem. Most people who contact Zika do not even know they have it because symptoms are so mild. The most important thing to note when traveling to a place with a risk of Zika is that you should continue wearing bug spray for 2 weeks after your trip, so you don't spread the virus if you contracted it. Feel free to contact us with any other questions regarding Zika or health concerns while traveling. You can also check the Center for Disease Control website for more information.

What is your cancellation / refund policy?

If you cancel 60 or more days prior to the trip, we will keep the $500 non-refundable deposit and refund you the rest of what you paid.

If you cancel 30 - 60 days prior to the trip, we will keep the non-refundable deposit and refund you 50% of the rest you've paid.

If you cancel within 30 days of the trip, we will not be able to refund you any of the payment.

This policy exists because Thread Caravan must prepare for the trip by making non-refundable payments for accommodation, transportation, artisan instruction, food, etc. We very strongly encourage you to purchase travel insurance so that you can be fully refunded by the insurance company should you need to cancel your trip.

Do you offer any discounts?

If you book with a friend or in a group, each person booking gets $100 off the trip cost.

We also recently launched an ambassador referral program. This program allows ambassadors to earn cash or a discount on a trip in exchange for promoting the trip to new travelers. If you're interested in being a part of the program, please contact us telling us why you'd like to join.

***Please note that only one discount can be applied per guest per workshop.
