Independent Textile Residency Program

Santa Maria del Tule, Oaxaca, Mexico

Applications accepted throughout the year on a rolling basis, for program duration of 1 - 4 weeks

Thread Caravan hosts ongoing textile residency programs, TEXERE,
inviting residents to work collaboratively and independently,
exploring themes such as textile production processes, materials, social fabric, environment, biodiversity,
in Santa Maria del Tule, Oaxaca, Mexico.

PROGRAMMING / INCLUSIONS

Textile residency programs typically last a duration of two to four weeks; however, residents may apply for shorter or longer periods of time.

Thread Caravan provides housing, workspace and tools, resources and contacts. Residents cover travel, workshop and materials expenses.

Programming includes:

  • Housing includes a private room and bathroom, and shared kitchen, garden and studio space.
The house can accommodate two residents at a time, in separate rooms, and up to 10 textile workers in the shared garden and work space.
The home also has a small shop, where residents can purchase materials for their projects.

  • TEXERE currently has a large floor loom and a collection of frame looms and 4-heddle table looms, a spinning wheel, as well as dye pots, embroidery hoops, knitting needles and other smaller textile tools. We also have a collection of textile books residents may access.

  • Our in-house tienda offers specialty yarns, thread, fabrics, raw fibers, dyestuffs, antique tools, and more. Open Monday - Saturday, 10am - 5pm.

  • During this program, TEXERE team will connect program participants to artists and artisans in the Oaxaca region during their stay.

Our team’s assistance with programming is an included service we provide; however, if residents take workshops with artists, these fees will be paid directly from residents to instructors.

  • Our team will meet residents at the start of each week, to help provide resources and guide their experience as needed.

  • Depending on residents’ practice and desires, our team is available upon request to contract photographers and videographers for documentation purpose, to mount expositions, and to facilitate resident-led workshops.

PARTNERS / RESEARCH TOPICS

Guests are invited to explore a range of textile themes, some of which include:
Weaving, spinning, natural dyes, embroidery, backstrap weaving, materials investigation, history of textile traditions.

This program is facilitated as a means of education and exchange within our community in Oaxaca.

ADDITIONAL NOTES

There is an option to exhibit works at the end of your stay, either in the residency house, in a gallery space in the city or in a community space.

This residency program is meant to facilitate experimentation, growth and exchange between fiber artists. It is not a space to develop a brand working with artisans. If the latter is something you are more interested in, you can attend one of Thread Caravan’s regular week-long Weaving Workshops.

You can navigate to the TEXERE website to learn more about the ethos of our sister project.
